Aloha! This is Noriko 🙂
The IEP student stuff Kano and I went for the big island trip together on the other day!!
This time, we started from Hilo, drove along the Hamakua coast to go the north side of this island, stopped by Honokaa town and Waipiʻo Valley, passed by Waimea and went down to Hapuna Beach and Waikoloa!
First stop! Honokaa Town, it’s about one hour away from Hilo by car.
There is People’s Theatre which had became famous for the movie “Honokaa Boy” .
This town is so cute!! You could enjoy just looking at stores.
Next stop! Waipiʻo Valley Lookout, about 10 minutes away by car from Honokaa Town.
Scenic spot of this beautiful Waipiʻo Valley.
You would be able to see Maui island too if the weather is nice and sunny.
There are so many stories and myth about Waipiʻo, and I learned a lot in the mythology class I took before at HCC.
You could study about Hawaiian culture or history wherever you are if you would like to, but when I actually could see or visit the places I learned at school like this, I am truly thankful for this opportunity to study in Hawaii 🙂
People still live in the valley and grow Kalo.
There is a road to go down, but I don’t recommend to go by a rental car. You could hike, but it would be hard for those of people who usually don’t hike because it would take about 2 hours to go down and come back…
If you still would like to try, you could sign up for a tour!
And the place I stopped by every time I came to Honokaa…Tex Drive In!!
This restaurant is famous for malasada, but they also have many kinds of hamburgers, lunch plates, and smoothies! and so ʻono 🙂
This time, I chose Kalua pork & Cabbage lunch plate! It was about $12. Good deal
And malasada…of course lol
Sometimes they sold out the malasada at evenings, so go earlier and try this malasada!! You will love it!
After we ate, we drove to the west side! We passed Waimea and went to Kohala.
Hapuna Beach is located in the South Kohala district and one of famous white sand beaches in Big island!
The water is so clear.
There are parking lots, toilets, and shower. Lifeguards are there too.
But please pay attention to little kids! Sometimes the waves get really high.
After enjoyed the beach, we went to shopping at Hilton Waikoloa Village 🙂
We could see the sunset on the way back home and came back to Hilo by 8pm!
It’s good to visit tourist places like this sometimes 🙂
IEP Summer Session started Week 2, but my school, HCC is on summer break until the end of August. So I would like to try go around this island and get to know more!!
I will share the information here 🙂
From this Friday, June 9th, Hula class will start at IEP!
You are in Hawaii, you should learn not only English but also Hawaiian culture!! Right? 😀 haha
We hope the students will enjoy the class 🙂
There are many events coming up next week! Yaay
